The Ballad of Maggie Maloney or "Peril, Pestilence, and Pasta!"
The Story of the Play . . .
Our story is set in the Wild West, circa 1891, in Golden Springs, Colorado, a once thriving mountain town that is now just a shadow of its former self since the gold mine dried up. Only a handful of residents remain hoping to find some way of restoring their town to its former glory. “Tweeter” Maloney and his lovely daughter, Maggie, pass the lazy, uneventful days by serving up sarsaparilla in the Sit-a-Spell Saloon, while the Golden Springs matriarch, Widder Bailey, lords over all and sundry, assisted by the youthful efforts of her young son, Sheriff Ted.
Into this laconic scene drives Stagecoach Sue everyday to water her horses and give her passengers a respite. However, on this particular day, rather than passengers passing through, she offloads a handful of unusual folks claiming the Sit-a-Spell Saloon as their primary destination! Now just why would a mysterious European immigrant troubadour named “King” George, a slippery, fast-talking, Medicine Man named Dr. Eucalyptus Jones, along with Lily Lightfoot, his Indian dancer assistant, and two rather foreboding creatures of a sinister nature by the names of Ahab Perfidy-Smythe and Barnaby Bogus, want to be settling in such a dying dust-bowl of a town? And, what’s behind these rumors of the railroad coming through? And, why does there appear to be an unusual number of migratory birds cooing, hooing, and screeching at regular intervals? And, why is the rain in Spain staying mainly on the plain and Italian folk-dancing so important to the future of all these characters?
